PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
FBA was responsible for the seismic risk and retrofit cost assessment of buildings owned by the City of San Francisco. The evaluation is intended to provide consistent risk assessment and retrofit cost estimates for 77 buildings. The evaluations were performed according to the "NEHRP Handbook For the Seismic Evaluation of Existing Buildings," and retrofits according to the 1991 San Francisco Building Code. The joint venture team of T.Y. Lin International/Faye Bernstein & Associates was selected for the eight buildings in Group A. The four buildings FBA was responsible for include a historic 1880's Opera House, Shorey Childrenšs Center, Hunter's Point Community Youth Center and the Mission Street Cultural Center.

FIRE DEPARTMENT FACILITIES
SAN FRANCISCO, CA

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The San Francisco Fire Department contracted for a study to determine the probable performance of 55 of their facilities in a major earthquake. FBA was responsible for eight of these facilities with a scope of services including a review of existing drawings, a walk-through survey of each building and proximate environment, structural calculations, and conceptual mitigation schemes to improve facility performance. The buildings were originally constructed from 1893 to 1976. Structural systems consisted of wood frame, wood with steel frame, wood with masonry, concrete shear wall, and concrete frame.
